A Brief History of the Dallas Poets Community

In 1990 a group of writers gathered at Sheryl St. Germain's house in the Lakewood area of Dallas for a workshop with Brenda Hillman. Out of that workshop, a core group of poets decided to continue meeting -- and we never stopped.

Former member, Liz DormanIn an effort to grow further as artists, we began inviting nationally-recognized poets to Dallas for readings and workshops. Writers like Brenda Hillman, Mark Doty, Leslie Ullman, Jack Myers, Chitra Divocoruny, and Sheryl St. Germain have been invited guests of the DPC.
In an effort to give back to the community, the Dallas Poets Community teaches workshops in local area high schools and provides speakers to other local arts organizations when requested.

Former Member, Beth Spence-CummingsWe hold an annual poetry contest for writers outside our organization and we publish a quarterly journal of contemporary poetry, Illya's Honey. We also participate in benefit readings for charitable organizations.

Currently we hold two workshops and one reading a month, as well as two poetry contests each year. Check our website and get on our mailing list for updates.
